During pregnancy, there are significant musculoskeletal and hormonal changes within your body, some of which can cause you discomfort.
We treat and advise on many conditions related to pregnancy, including but not limited to:
· Neck pain and headaches
· Upper back pain
· Lower back pain
· Pelvic pain (sacroiliac joint and pubic symphysis)
· Carpal tunnel syndrome
· Pelvic floor issues and incontinence
· Issues with sleeping position
Exercise during pregnancy is widely supported by evidence to have benefits for mother, baby and the birth process. We can provide advice and exercise programs (home or in session) specifically tailored for your needs and we can also discuss birth and labour skills from a physiotherapy perspective.
Pilates is a great form of exercise during pregnancy and is suitable in all trimesters. Starting early can prepare you for the upcoming demands on your body. Pilates can prevent many pregnancy related aches and pains and potentially equip you for a more speedy recovery by getting you strong and mobile.
Perineal Massage
There is some really strong evidence now that perineal massage helps prevent severe tears and reduces the need for episiotomies which is something we at SCPP really want to get behind.
We are now offering short appointments for anyone who'd like us to help apply these techniques effectively. We will likely suggest a weekly appointment in the weeks leading up to birth but this depends on your specific circumstances and your desire/ability/motivation to do perineal massage at home.
Your physio will be able to tell you when it's best to start these appointments, usually from 34 weeks or so. You can bring your partner along so you can both learn how to do this together at home. Alternatively, you can see one of our physios regularly and let us do the massage for you!
